Federal markets its Champion 40-grain FMJ for target shooting. It is a plain full metal jacket bullet with a closed, jacketed nose, the standard pick for paper and plinking. Federal rates it at a G1 BC of .111, and it leaves the muzzle at 1,880 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 6 inches at 150.
Compared with Winchester's Super-X 40-grain FMJ, the Champion starts 30 fps slower and follows nearly the same path. At 150 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Champion about 14 inches sideways and the Winchester about 13. Compared with CCI's Maxi-Mag TMJ, which starts only 5 fps slower, the Champion falls behind with distance: the CCI is 56 fps faster by 100 yards, and the same wind pushes it about 12 inches at 150.
