CCI markets its Maxi-Mag TMJ for target shooting. TMJ stands for total metal jacket: the jacket encloses the whole 40-grain lead core, base included, instead of leaving the base bare. The bullet is rated at a G1 BC of .127 and leaves the muzzle at 1,875 fps. It holds that speed well and is still doing 1,365 fps at 100 yards.
Compared with Federal's Champion 40-grain full metal jacket, which starts 5 fps faster, the CCI pulls ahead with distance and is 56 fps faster by 100 yards. At 150 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the CCI about 12 inches sideways and the Champion about 14. Compared with Fiocchi's 40-grain FMJ, the CCI starts slower, but the two fly almost alike after that: the same wind pushes the Fiocchi about 12 inches at 150 yards as well.
