Product Overview
CCI's Maxi-Mag TNT is a hollow-point load that CCI markets for varmints. Its 30-grain TNT bullet is a jacketed hollow point, rated at a G1 BC of .088, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps. Past 100 yards it drifts more than the 30-grain tipped bullets it is compared with.
Compared with Federal's V-Shok 30-grain Speer TNT, the Maxi-Mag TNT is nearly the same load. Both leave the muzzle at the same speed, and at 150 yards a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 15 inches sideways. Compared with CCI's Varmint Tipped 30-grain, which uses CCI's tipped VNT bullet at the same speed, the Maxi-Mag TNT gives up ground downrange. The same wind pushes the Varmint Tipped about 11 inches at 150 yards, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 4 inches at 150 against the Maxi-Mag's 5.
Buy the Maxi-Mag TNT if you want a hollow point for varmints out to about 150 yards; on the trajectory numbers the Federal V-Shok is an equal choice. Pick CCI's Varmint Tipped 30-grain or its Varmint V-Max 30-grain if wind at 150 yards is your main concern. Pick CCI's TNT Green if you need a lead-free bullet; it starts 150 fps slower. For a heavier bullet, Winchester's Super-X 40-grain JHP starts 290 fps slower but drifts about 13 inches at 150 yards.
