Product Overview
Winchester markets its Varmint LF load for varmints and small game. It fires a 25-grain polymer-tipped NTX bullet, lighter than the 30-grain bullets in the loads it is compared with. Winchester rates the bullet at a G1 BC of .081, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,100 fps. The light bullet gives up speed quickly past 100 yards, and that shows most in the wind.
Compared with Hornady's Varmint Express V-Max, the Winchester starts 100 fps slower and drifts more. At 150 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Varmint LF about 18 inches sideways and the Hornady about 14. Compared with Federal's V-Shok 30-grain Speer TNT, a jacketed hollow point, the difference in drop is small. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Winchester drops about 6 inches at 150 yards and the Federal about 5.
Buy the Varmint LF if you want Winchester's NTX bullet for varmints and small game and most of your shots fall inside 100 yards. Pick the Hornady V-Max if you shoot out to 150 yards in open wind; it drifts the least of the 25- and 30-grain loads compared on this page. Pick CCI's Maxi-Mag TNT 30-grain or the Federal V-Shok if you would rather have a hollow point at 2,200 fps. If you want a heavier bullet, Winchester's Super-X 40-grain JHP starts 190 fps slower but drifts about 13 inches at 150 yards.
