Wind is the main reason to choose CCI's Varmint Tipped. CCI markets it for varmints and loads it with the VNT, CCI's tipped bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .116. It leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 4 inches at 150 yards, a flatter path than the hollow points and the Hornady and Winchester loads it is compared with.
Compared with Hornady's Varmint Express, a polymer-tipped load that leaves at the same muzzle speed, the Varmint Tipped holds up better in the wind. At 150 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Varmint Tipped about 11 inches sideways and the Hornady about 14. Compared with CCI's Maxi-Mag TNT 30-grain, a jacketed hollow point at the same speed, the gap is wider. The same wind pushes the Maxi-Mag about 15 inches at 150 yards, and by then it has slowed to 1,140 fps against 1,321 for the Varmint Tipped.
