Winchester's 140-grain Ballistic Silvertip is a middle-weight 7mm-08 hunting load, for hunters who want a heavier bullet than the 120-grain loads without the full recoil of a 150. The Ballistic Silvertip is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet. It is rated at a G1 BC of .454 and leaves the muzzle at 2,770 fps.
Compared with Hornady's 150-grain Precision Hunter ELD-X, the Silvertip starts at the same speed but gives ground downrange. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Silvertip about 21 inches sideways and the Precision Hunter about 16. That is how far the bullet lands from where you aimed if you make no allowance for the wind. Zeroed at 200 yards, the Silvertip drops about 47 inches at 500 and the Precision Hunter about 43. In return, the Precision Hunter kicks about 15 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX 120-grain TTSX, a copper bullet with no lead core, the Silvertip starts 235 fps slower but is less affected by wind: the same wind pushes the TTSX about 24 inches at 500 yards. The TTSX kicks about 20 percent less.
Buy the Silvertip if you want a middle weight that starts as fast as the 150 and kicks less. Pick the Precision Hunter, which Hornady markets for large game, if you shoot past 300 yards and want the least wind drift. Pick the TTSX, which Barnes markets for big game and medium game, if you want a bullet with no lead core and lighter recoil. Federal's Fusion 120 is the lead-core choice at 120 grains; Federal built it for deer hunting, and it leaves the muzzle 230 fps faster than the Silvertip.
