Every load we price, sorted by cost per round delivered to your state

We track 3 7mm-08 Remington loads from 1 dealer. The cheapest delivered to AR, shipping included, is Hornady Precision Hunter 7mm-08 Remington 150gr ELD-X Ammo at $1.96 a round.

The 7mm-08 Remington is a short-action cartridge for deer, pronghorn and black bear, chosen by hunters who want a light rifle that kicks a little less than a .308. It is a .308 Winchester case necked down to fire .284-inch (7mm) bullets. Wildcatters shot it from about 1958, and Remington standardized it in 1980.

The loads on this page run 120 to 150 grains at 2,770 to 3,005 fps. The 120 grain loads, such as the Barnes TTSX or Federal Fusion, shoot fastest and suit deer and pronghorn. The 140 grain Ballistic Silvertip and 150 grain ELD-X carry more weight for larger deer, and the ELD-X holds its velocity better at long range. The Barnes TTSX is all copper, for areas that require lead-free bullets.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros

  • Against the .308, it recoils less with 140 grain bullets that still carry enough energy for deer at normal hunting ranges.
  • Fits short actions, so rifles are compact and light.
  • High-BC 7mm bullets hold velocity and resist wind drift better than .308 bullets of similar weight.

Cons

  • Against the .308, it gives up bullet weight, topping out near 150 to 160 grains for elk.
  • No FMJ practice ammo, so every range session uses hunting loads.
  • Fewer rifle models are chambered for it than for .308 or .30-06.
