Product Overview
Federal built its Fusion line for deer hunting and lists this 120-grain 7mm-08 load for big game. The Fusion Soft Point is a bonded soft point bullet, with the jacket fused to the lead core. It is rated at a G1 BC of .335 and leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps. Zeroed at 200 yards, it is about 7 inches low at 300.
Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX 120-grain TTSX, the Fusion starts at the same speed and kicks the same in the same rifle. The TTSX, a copper bullet with no lead core, holds up a little better in wind: at 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Fusion about 27 inches sideways and the TTSX about 24. That figure is how far the wind moves the bullet off your aiming point if you do not allow for it. Compared with Winchester's Ballistic Silvertip 140, the Fusion leaves the muzzle 230 fps faster, but the heavier Silvertip is moving faster by 400 yards. Zeroed at 200 yards, the Fusion drops about 22 inches at 400 and the Silvertip about 23. The same wind pushes the Silvertip about 21 inches at 500, and it kicks about 24 percent harder.
Buy the Fusion 120 if you hunt deer with a 7mm-08 and want a fast, light-kicking lead-core load. Pick the TTSX if you want a bullet with no lead core, or a little less drift at the same speed and recoil. Pick the Silvertip if you often shoot past 300 yards and can take more recoil. For the longest shots, Hornady's 150-grain Precision Hunter ELD-X, which Hornady markets for large game, drifts about 16 inches at 500 yards in the same wind.
