Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X for medium game. The ELD-X is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .512, and this load starts it at 2,800 fps with 1,793 ft-lbs of energy. At 300 yards it still carries 1,197 ft-lbs.
Compared with HSM's Tipping Point 95-grain SST, the Precision Hunter carries a heavier bullet, 103 grains against 95, and leaves the muzzle 216 fps slower. The lighter Tipping Point also kicks about 8 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with HSM's Trophy Gold 95-grain Berger VLD, the Precision Hunter starts 100 fps slower, and the two leave the muzzle with nearly the same energy. The Trophy Gold kicks about 12 percent less than the Precision Hunter.
Buy the Precision Hunter if you hunt the medium game Hornady markets it for and want a heavier bullet than either HSM 95-grain load. Pick the Tipping Point if you want the faster start; HSM markets it for small to medium-sized game and for target shooting. Pick the Trophy Gold if light recoil matters most; HSM markets it for match shooting and for hunting medium game. For practice between hunts, Hornady markets its BLACK 105-grain BTHP for target and match shooting, and it flies close to the ELD-X: zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 54 inches at 500, where the Precision Hunter drops about 53.
