Hornady's 147-grain ELD Match is the heaviest of Hornady's ELD Match loads, a target load for steel and paper at longer range where wind is the hard part. It uses Hornady's polymer-tipped ELD Match bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .697, and leaves the muzzle at 2,695 fps. Of the match loads it is compared with, it drifts the least in a crosswind.

Compared with Hornady's 140-grain ELD Match, the 147 is close in almost everything. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the 147 about 13 inches sideways and the 140 about 14. Zeroed at 100 yards, the 147 drops about 53 inches at 500 and the 140 about 53. The 147 kicks about 10 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's 120-grain ELD Match, the gap is bigger. The 120 starts 215 fps faster and drops less, about 49 inches at 500, but the same wind pushes it about 18 inches. The 147 kicks about 38 percent harder than the 120.

Buy the 147 if you shoot steel and paper at 400 and 500 yards and wind is what makes you miss. Pick the ELD Match 140 if you want nearly the same wind performance with a little less recoil. Pick the ELD Match 120 if light recoil matters most or most of your shots are inside 300 yards. If you also hunt with the same rifle, Hornady's Precision Hunter 143 carries the ELD-X, Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet, and the same wind pushes it about 15 inches at 500 yards.
