Product Overview
Hornady's 120-grain ELD Match is the light, fast end of Hornady's ELD Match line, a target load for steel and paper. The ELD Match is Hornady's polymer-tipped match bullet with a boat tail; in this weight it is rated at a G1 BC of .486 and leaves the muzzle at 2,910 fps. That speed gives it the flattest path of Hornady's match loads: zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 49 inches at 500.
Compared with Federal's American Eagle 120-grain OTM, the ELD Match 120 is level at the muzzle, 10 fps faster with about the same recoil, and pulls ahead downrange. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD Match 120 about 18 inches sideways and the American Eagle about 22. Compared with Hornady's 147-grain ELD Match, the 120 trades wind for speed and softer recoil. It starts 215 fps faster, but the same wind pushes the 147 only about 13 inches at 500 yards. The 147 kicks about 38 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the ELD Match 120 if you want light recoil and a flat path for steel and paper out to 500 yards. Pick the American Eagle 120 for practice inside 300 yards, where the two drift within about an inch of each other. Pick the 147 if wind at 400 and 500 yards is what makes you miss and the extra recoil does not bother you. The ELD Match is a target bullet; for deer, Winchester markets its Deer Season XP 125-grain as a hunting load.
