Hornady's American Gunner 140-grain is a target and range load for steel and paper. It carries a hollow point boat tail match bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .580, and leaves the muzzle at 2,690 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 56 inches at 500 yards.

Compared with Hornady's 140-grain ELD Match, the American Gunner starts 20 fps slower and kicks about the same, but it gives up some ground in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the American Gunner about 17 inches sideways and the ELD Match 140 about 14. From the same zero, the ELD Match 140 drops about 53 inches at 500. Compared with Hornady's 147-grain ELD Match, the gap in wind is wider: the same wind pushes the 147 about 13 inches at 500 yards. The 147 kicks about 11 percent harder in the same rifle.

Buy the American Gunner 140 for steel and paper inside 300 yards, or as a practice load at the same bullet weight as the ELD Match 140; at 300 yards the two drop within about half an inch of each other. Pick the ELD Match 140 if you shoot out to 500 yards and want less drift for the same recoil. Pick the 147 if wind is your main problem and you can take the extra recoil. For plain range practice, Aguila's 140-grain FMJBT is a full metal jacket load of the same weight that leaves the muzzle 90 fps slower.
