Hornady's 140-grain ELD Match is a target load for steel and paper. It uses Hornady's polymer-tipped ELD Match bullet, rated at a G7 BC of .326, and leaves the muzzle at 2,710 fps. Hornady also loads this bullet in 120 and 147 grains, and the 140 sits between them: it holds up well in the wind without the heavier recoil of the 147.

Compared with Hornady's 147-grain ELD Match, the 140 gives up very little. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the 140 about 14 inches sideways and the 147 about 13. The 147 also kicks about 10 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's 120-grain ELD Match, the 140 starts 200 fps slower but handles wind better: at 500 yards the same wind pushes the 120 about 18 inches.

Buy the 140 if you shoot steel and paper out to 500 yards and want one load that does both well. Pick the 147 if you shoot mostly at long range in wind and don't mind a little more recoil. Pick the 120 if light recoil matters most; it kicks about 20 percent less. For practice at the same bullet weight, Aguila's 140-grain FMJBT is a full metal jacket range load that leaves the muzzle 110 fps slower.
