HSM markets its Bear Load 300-grain for hunting medium to large game, and for target shooting. The bullet is a jacketed flat point: a lead core in a copper jacket, with a flat nose. It leaves the muzzle at 1,930 fps with 2,482 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Hornady's Custom 250-grain FTX, which Hornady markets for large game, the Bear Load trades speed for bullet weight. It carries 50 more grains but starts 270 fps slower, and it kicks about 27 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX 250-grain XFB, an all-copper bullet that Barnes markets for big and medium game, the Bear Load leaves the muzzle with 329 ft-lbs less energy. The choice between those two is a heavier bullet with a lead core or a lighter one made of copper all the way through.
Buy the Bear Load if you want a 300-grain bullet for medium to large game and can take the extra recoil. Pick the Hornady Custom if you want a faster 250-grain load for large game that kicks less. Pick the Barnes if you want copper with no lead core. Pick Winchester's Deer Season XP 250-grain if you hunt deer, which Winchester markets it for. Federal's Power-Shok 300-grain is another 300-grain choice, a soft point that Federal markets for big game; it leaves the muzzle 30 fps slower than the Bear Load.
