Product Overview
Hornady markets its BLACK 250-grain FTX for personal defense. It uses Hornady's FTX, a polymer-tipped bullet with a lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .210. It leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps with 2,686 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Hornady's Custom 250-grain FTX, the BLACK is the same load on paper: Hornady loads the same FTX bullet in both at the same speed. Zeroed at 100 yards, each drops about 9 inches at 200 yards. At 200 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes each about 10 inches sideways, which is how far from the spot you aimed at the bullet lands. What differs is Hornady's stated purpose: it markets the Custom for large game. Compared with HSM's Bear Load 300-grain, a heavier jacketed flat point, the BLACK starts 270 fps faster, and the Bear Load kicks about 27 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the BLACK if you want a .450 Bushmaster load that Hornady markets for personal defense. If you hunt, the Custom flies the same and is the Hornady load marketed for large game. Pick Winchester's Deer Season XP 250-grain if you hunt deer, which Winchester markets it for; it matches the BLACK's speed and drop. Pick the Bear Load only if you want a heavier bullet and accept more recoil. Federal's Power-Shok 300-grain is another heavy choice, a soft point that Federal markets for big game; zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 12 inches at 200.
