Underwood markets its 245-grain .450 Bushmaster load for hunting and for self-defense, and names no particular game for it. The bullet is a fluted solid-copper design with no lead core. It leaves the muzzle at 2,260 fps with 2,779 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Hornady's BLACK 250-grain FTX, which Hornady markets for personal defense, the Underwood starts 60 fps faster with 93 ft-lbs more energy at the muzzle. The Hornady uses a polymer-tipped bullet with a lead core, so the choice is as much about bullet design as speed. Compared with HSM's Bear Load 300-grain, a heavier jacketed flat point that HSM markets for medium to large game, the Underwood leaves the muzzle 330 fps faster, and the Bear Load kicks about 29 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Underwood if you want one solid-copper load that its maker markets for both hunting and self-defense. Pick the BLACK if you want Hornady's polymer-tipped bullet in a load Hornady markets for personal defense.
