Product Overview
Winchester markets its Deer Season XP 250-grain for deer: whitetail, mule deer and blacktail. The load uses Winchester's Extreme Point, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet. It is rated at a G1 BC of .210 and leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 9 inches at 200.
Compared with Hornady's Custom 250-grain FTX, also a polymer-tipped bullet, there is nothing to choose on paper: the same speed, the same G1 BC and the same drop at 200 yards. At that distance, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes each about 10 inches sideways, off the spot you aimed at, and each still carries 1,274 ft-lbs of energy. Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX 250-grain XFB, an all-copper bullet with no lead core, the Deer Season XP starts 50 fps slower with 125 ft-lbs less energy, and it kicks about 2 percent less in the same rifle. By 200 yards that edge is gone, and the Deer Season XP carries 29 ft-lbs more energy than the Barnes.
Buy the Deer Season XP if you hunt deer and want the load Winchester markets for it. Pick the Hornady Custom if you prefer Hornady's FTX; Hornady markets it for large game, and it flies the same. Pick the Barnes if you want a bullet with no lead core; Barnes markets it for big and medium game. Federal's Power-Shok 300-grain carries a heavier soft point that Federal markets for big game, but it kicks about 25 percent harder than the Deer Season XP in the same rifle.
