Product Overview
Hornady markets its Custom 250-grain FTX for large game. The FTX is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet, with a lead core under a copper jacket. It is rated at a G1 BC of .210 and leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps. At 200 yards it still carries 1,274 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP 250-grain, another polymer-tipped hunting bullet, the Custom is a match on paper. Both leave the muzzle at the same speed, and zeroed at 100 yards, both drop about 9 inches at 200. At that distance a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes each about 10 inches sideways, off the spot you aimed at. Compared with HSM's Bear Load 300-grain, a heavier jacketed flat point, the Custom starts 270 fps faster and kicks about 21 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Custom if you hunt large game and want Hornady's polymer-tipped bullet at the common 250-grain weight. Pick the Deer Season XP if you hunt deer: Winchester markets it for whitetail, mule and blacktail deer, and nothing in the numbers separates it from the Custom. Pick the Bear Load if you want a 300-grain bullet for medium to large game, as HSM markets it, and can take the extra recoil. Federal's Power-Shok 300-grain is a heavy soft point that Federal markets for big game; zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 12 inches at 200.
