Product Overview
Hornady sells its Match 250-grain BTHP as a target and match load. The bullet is a match hollow point with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .670, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,860 fps. That is a modest start for a 250-grain load, but the bullet holds its speed well over 500 yards.
Compared with Federal's Gold Medal Match 250-grain, the Hornady starts 90 fps slower but draws level by 500 yards. At that distance, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Hornady about 13 inches sideways and the Federal about 14. Compared with Hornady's Match 285-grain ELD Match, the 250 starts 115 fps faster and drops a little less: zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 46 inches at 500 and the 285 about 49. The heavier ELD Match handles wind better, about 11 inches in the same wind, but it kicks about 24 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Hornady Match 250 if you shoot targets out to 500 yards and want a 250-grain bullet with a little less wind drift and lighter recoil than Federal's Gold Medal Match 250-grain. Pick the Federal if you want the faster start and a slightly flatter path. Pick the 285-grain ELD Match if you shoot mostly in wind and don't mind the heavier kick. Pick Remington Express 250-grain Scenar Match if muzzle speed matters most to you.
