Hornady sells its Match 285-grain ELD Match as a target and match load. The ELD Match is Hornady's polymer-tipped match bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .789, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,745 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 49 inches at 500.
Compared with Underwood's Custom Competition 300-grain, the ELD Match gives up nothing in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 11 inches sideways. The Underwood starts 45 fps slower and kicks about 9 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's 300-grain Sierra MatchKing, the ELD Match starts 165 fps faster and flies flatter: from the same zero, the Federal drops about 57 inches at 500, and the same wind pushes it about 13 inches.
Buy the ELD Match if you shoot targets or matches out to 500 yards and want a heavy bullet that handles wind well with less recoil than the 300-grain loads from Underwood, Federal and Barnes. Pick Underwood's Custom Competition if you also hunt; Underwood markets it to competition shooters, long-range shooters and large game hunters. Pick Federal's 300-grain Sierra MatchKing if you want a 300-grain bullet from Federal, which markets it for competition, long-range and target shooting.
