Federal markets its Gold Medal Match 250-grain for competition, long-range and target shooting. It is loaded with the MatchKing, a match hollow point with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .587. It leaves the muzzle at 2,950 fps, and that speed gives it a flat path out to 500 yards.
Compared with Hornady's Match 250-grain BTHP, the Federal starts 90 fps faster, but its lower G1 BC, .587 against .670, lets the Hornady draw level by 500 yards. At that distance, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Federal about 14 inches sideways and the Hornady about 13. Compared with Hornady's Match 285-grain ELD Match, the Federal drops less but drifts more. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Federal drops about 44 inches at 500 and the 285 about 49, while the same wind pushes the 285 about 11 inches. The 285 also kicks about 20 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Gold Medal Match 250 if you shoot matches or targets out to 500 yards and want the flatter path of a fast 250-grain bullet. Pick Hornady's Match 250-grain BTHP if you want a little less wind drift and slightly softer recoil at the same bullet weight. Pick the 285-grain ELD Match if you shoot mostly in wind and don't mind the extra kick.
