Winchester markets its 170-grain Power-Point for whitetail and big game. It uses the same Power-Point design as Winchester's 150-grain load, a jacketed soft point with exposed lead at the nose, in a heavier bullet. At 170 grains it is rated at a G1 BC of .241 and leaves the muzzle at 2,200 fps.

Compared with Winchester's 150-grain Power-Point, the 170 starts 190 fps slower, yet by 200 yards it carries a little more energy: 957 ft-lbs against 947. It drops more on the way. Zeroed at 100 yards, the 170 drops about 8 inches at 200 and the 150 about 7. Wind treats them alike: at 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes each about 21 inches sideways. The 170 also kicks about 18 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's Ballistic Silvertip 150-grain, the 170 falls further behind at 300 yards: from a 100-yard zero it drops about 31 inches there, and the Ballistic Silvertip about 26.

Buy the 170 if you want Winchester's heavier soft point for whitetail and big game and can live with a little more drop. Pick the Super-X 150-grain Power-Point if you want the same bullet design with less recoil and a flatter path. Pick the Ballistic Silvertip if you want a polymer tip and expect shots out toward 300 yards. For a hollow point instead of a soft point, Winchester's Super-X 150-grain JHP kicks about 15 percent less than the 170 in the same rifle.
