Product Overview
Hornady's Full Boar 140-grain MonoFlex is for hunters who want a .30-30 bullet with no lead core. The MonoFlex is a copper bullet with a soft polymer tip. It leaves the muzzle at 2,500 fps with 1,943 ft-lbs of energy, from a bullet 10 grains lighter than the usual 150-grain .30-30 hunting bullet.
Compared with Winchester's 150-grain Power-Point, a plain lead-core soft point, the Full Boar starts 110 fps faster and carries 41 ft-lbs more at the muzzle. Its lighter bullet also makes it the softer load to shoot: the Power-Point kicks about 10 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's Ballistic Silvertip 150-grain, which also has a polymer tip but a lead core under it, the Full Boar holds the same edge at the start, since the Ballistic Silvertip also leaves the muzzle at 2,390 fps. Between those two, the real difference is what the bullet is made of.
Buy the Full Boar if you want a copper bullet with no lead core and a little less recoil than a 150-grain load. Pick the Super-X 150-grain Power-Point if you want the plain soft point that Winchester markets for whitetail and big game. Pick the Ballistic Silvertip if you want a polymer tip over a lead core, in a load Winchester markets for big game. Pick Buffalo Bore's Heavy 190-grain JFN only if you hunt elk- or moose-sized game, which Buffalo Bore markets it for; it leaves the muzzle 400 fps slower and kicks about 54 percent harder than the Full Boar in the same rifle.
