Product Overview
Buffalo Bore markets its Heavy 190-grain JFN for elk- and moose-sized game and for defense in grizzly country, and it says plainly that the load is not designed for deer. The JFN is a jacketed flat-nose bullet, and at 190 grains it is heavier than the 150- and 170-grain bullets Winchester and Federal load in their .30-30 hunting rounds. It leaves the muzzle at 2,100 fps with 1,860 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Winchester's 170-grain Power-Point, the Buffalo Bore starts 100 fps slower but carries 33 ft-lbs more at the muzzle. It also kicks about 19 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's Power-Shok 150-grain, the gap in speed grows: the Buffalo Bore leaves the muzzle 290 fps slower and carries 42 ft-lbs less energy at the start, because its heavier bullet does not make up for the lost speed.
Buy the Buffalo Bore if you hunt elk- or moose-sized game with a .30-30, as Buffalo Bore intends, and accept the extra recoil. Pick the Super-X 170-grain Power-Point if you want a heavy soft point for whitetail and big game, which Winchester markets it for, with less kick. Pick the Power-Shok if you hunt deer or other big game and want a lighter bullet and a faster start. Pick Hornady's Full Boar 140-grain MonoFlex if you want a bullet with no lead core; it leaves the muzzle 400 fps faster and kicks about 35 percent less than the Buffalo Bore in the same rifle.
