Product Overview
Federal builds its Gold Medal line for match shooters and lists this 69-grain load for competition, long-range and target shooting. The bullet is Sierra's MatchKing, a hollow point with a boat tail made for paper and steel targets, rated at a G1 BC of .301. It leaves the muzzle at 2,950 fps, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 59 inches at 500.
Compared with Winchester's 69-grain Sierra MatchKing load, the Gold Medal is hard to tell apart on the numbers. The Winchester starts 50 fps faster, but at 500 yards a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes both bullets about 32 inches sideways. Compared with Hornady's BLACK 75-grain BTHP Match, the Gold Medal starts 160 fps faster and drops about the same at 500 yards. The heavier BLACK holds its line much better in wind, though: the same wind pushes it about 25 inches at 500. The BLACK also kicks about 11 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Gold Medal if you want Sierra's MatchKing in Federal's match line and lighter recoil than the BLACK 75. Pick the BLACK 75 if you shoot at 500 yards in wind and can live with the extra kick. Pick the Winchester if you want the same bullet weight with a slightly faster start. Pick Hornady's Frontier 68-grain BTHP Match if you want less drift and drop at 500 yards without more recoil; the same wind pushes it about 26 inches.
