Product Overview
Hornady sells its Frontier line for plinking, target shooting and training, and this 68-grain load puts a match bullet in that line. Hornady's BTHP Match is a hollow point bullet with a boat tail, made for paper and steel targets, and the 68-grain version is rated at a G1 BC of .355. It leaves the muzzle at 2,960 fps, and that light, fast bullet keeps both drop and wind drift low out to 500 yards.
Compared with Hornady's BLACK 75-grain BTHP Match, the Frontier starts 170 fps faster and gives up almost nothing in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Frontier about 26 inches sideways and the BLACK about 25. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Frontier drops about 54 inches at 500 and the BLACK about 59. The BLACK also kicks about 14 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's Gold Medal 69-grain, the Frontier leaves the muzzle at almost the same speed but holds up better downrange, because the Gold Medal's bullet carries a lower G1 BC of .301. The same wind pushes the Gold Medal about 32 inches at 500 yards.
Buy the Frontier 68 if you shoot paper and steel out to 500 yards and want a flat path without heavy recoil. Pick the BLACK 75 if the last inch of wind drift matters more to you than recoil. Pick the Gold Medal 69 if you prefer Federal's match load and Sierra's MatchKing bullet, and can accept more drift in the wind.
