Product Overview

Federal Gold Medal 69gr BTHP is the benchmark .223 Remington match load. It uses the Sierra 69gr MatchKing bullet, which has been winning NRA High Power and service rifle competitions for decades. The 0.301 G1 ballistic coefficient and 2,950 fps muzzle velocity produce a trajectory that is predictable and repeatable shot after shot. Federal loads this round with tight tolerances on powder charge, overall length, and bullet concentricity. The result is some of the smallest extreme velocity spreads available in factory .223 ammunition.

Competitive shooters use Gold Medal as their go-to match load or as a standard to measure handloads against. In a quality bolt-action rifle or a well-built AR-15 with a 1:8 twist barrel, this load regularly produces sub-MOA groups at 100 yards and maintains that accuracy out to 600 yards. The Sierra MatchKing bullet is not designed to expand, so this is strictly a target and competition round. The 69gr weight is a sweet spot that stabilizes in 1:8 and 1:9 twist barrels, making it compatible with a wider range of rifles than the heavier 75gr and 77gr match bullets.

Precision rifle shooters who are developing loads for a new barrel often start with Gold Medal 69gr to establish a baseline for accuracy before experimenting with handloads. If your rifle won't group Gold Medal well, the problem is likely the rifle rather than the ammunition. The brass is among the best factory brass available and can be reloaded many times with minimal preparation. For shooters who want the highest factory accuracy in .223 Remington without handloading, Gold Medal is the standard by which everything else is measured.

Strengths
  • Sierra 69gr MatchKing bullet is the proven standard for .223 match accuracy
  • Extremely tight velocity spreads from Federal's precision loading process
  • Compatible with 1:8 and 1:9 twist barrels for broad rifle compatibility
  • Gold Medal brass is among the best factory brass for reloading
  • Sub-MOA accuracy in quality rifles is the norm rather than the exception
Limitations
  • Highest cost per round among .223 Remington options listed here
  • MatchKing bullet is not designed to expand, limiting it to target use only
  • Lower BC (0.301 G1) than heavier 75gr match bullets like Hornady BLACK (0.395)
