Product Overview
Hornady tags its BLACK 75-grain BTHP Match as a target and match load. The BTHP Match is a hollow point bullet with a boat tail, made for paper and steel targets, and the 75-grain version is rated at a G1 BC of .395. It leaves the muzzle at 2,790 fps, giving up some starting speed in exchange for holding its line in the wind.
Compared with Hornady's Frontier 68-grain BTHP Match, the BLACK starts 170 fps slower and gains very little for it. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the BLACK about 25 inches sideways and the Frontier about 26. Zeroed at 100 yards, the BLACK drops about 59 inches at 500 and the Frontier about 54. The BLACK also kicks about 14 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's Gold Medal 69-grain, the BLACK's edge is clearer: the same wind pushes the Gold Medal about 32 inches at 500 yards, while the two drop about the same. The Gold Medal kicks about 10 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the BLACK 75 if you shoot paper and steel at 400 to 500 yards and wind is the problem you most want to solve. Pick the Frontier 68 if you want nearly the same wind drift with less drop and less recoil. Pick the Gold Medal 69 if you want Sierra's MatchKing bullet and lighter recoil, and can accept more drift. Pick Hornady's Critical Defense 73-grain FTX only if you want a defensive load; Hornady builds it for self-defense rifles, and it leaves the muzzle at the same speed as the BLACK.
