The FN 309 MRD is FN's 2026 compact 9mm at a $549 list price, and it is not a striker gun. It uses an internal hammer and a single-action trigger rated at 5.0 lbs. The question it answers is whether a hammer-fired, optic-ready compact from FN is a better choice than the Glock G19 Gen5 MOS it is cross-shopped against.
FN says the slide takes 25% less effort to rack than the FN 509 Tactical, and its magazines use springs with 40% lower force than others in its class, both aimed at shooters with weaker hands. Against the G19 Gen5 MOS, it holds one more round in the flush magazine, weighs 1.31 oz less, and its trigger is rated 0.8 lb lighter. The Smith & Wesson Equalizer is another internal-hammer carry gun at a similar price, but it is smaller, holds fewer rounds and adds thumb and grip safeties. The FN 509 Tactical has a threaded barrel and lists for $440 more.
Buy the 309 MRD if you want a compact with a single-action feel, an easy slide and a red dot cut. Skip it if you need a manual safety, which this SKU does not have, or if you need Glock-level holster choice, in which case buy the G19 Gen5 MOS.
