Winchester's Defender 124-grain bonded jacketed hollow point is a +P load rated at 1,200 fps with 396 ft-lbs. Power factor is 149, 24 points over the 125 minor floor. From a 25-yard zero it drops 1.2 inches at 50 yards and 9.7 inches at 100. Estimated recoil energy in a 1.9-pound compact pistol is 5.0 ft-lbs, the highest in this comparison. +P is pressure above standard, so confirm the pistol is rated for +P before shooting it.
Federal Hi-Shok 115-grain +P+ leaves 100 fps faster at 1,300 fps with 36 ft-lbs more, but its lighter bullet keeps its power factor at 150 and its recoil energy within 1 percent of the Defender; the Federal needs a +P+ rating. Hornady Critical Duty 124-grain FlexLock is the other +P load, 25 fps and 16 ft-lbs behind with about 4 percent less recoil energy.
