Solved from this product's advertised 1150 fps, 124gr bullet and G1 BC 0.150, with the sight 0.5" over the bore at standard conditions. Compare every zero for 9mm Luger, or read Pistol Red Dot: 10-Yard vs 25-Yard Zero.
How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.
9mm Luger 124gr with a 10-yard zero
Zeroed at 10 yards with a 0.5" sight height, this load crosses the line of sight at 10 and 35 yards, peaks +0.2" at 22 yards, and is -0.9" at 50 and -9.2" at 100 yards.

Product Overview
Federal's HST 124-grain jacketed hollow point leaves the muzzle at 1,150 fps with 364 ft-lbs of energy, a power factor of 143. The HST bullet has a pre-scored jacket designed to open on impact. From a 25-yard zero it sits 1.3 inches low at 50 yards and 10.0 inches low at 100, and it is still moving at 1,048 fps at 50. In a 1.9-pound compact pistol the estimated recoil energy is 4.7 ft-lbs.
Speer Gold Dot 124-grain matches it exactly at 1,150 fps and 364 ft-lbs, so the choice between the two comes down to bullet design, not numbers. The +P loads sit above it: Winchester Defender +P 124 is 50 fps faster with 32 ft-lbs more energy and about 7 percent more recoil, and Hornady Critical Duty +P 124 FlexLock is 25 fps faster with about 4 percent more recoil. Hornady Critical Defense 115 FTX goes the other way at 1,135 fps and 332 ft-lbs, with about 16 percent less recoil than the HST. Drop at 50 yards is within three tenths of an inch across every load here.
This is a primary carry and home defense load for shooters who want standard-pressure recoil in a compact pistol. For practice, Speer Lawman 124 TMJ is 60 fps slower and about 9 percent softer, close enough to build the same habits without the hollow point. If you carry a micro-compact and find 4.7 ft-lbs of recoil energy hard to control, Critical Defense 115 FTX is the softer option. If your pistol is rated for +P and you want the most muzzle energy of these loads, Winchester Defender +P 124 gives 396 ft-lbs against 364 here. Check the pistol's rating before running +P.
- 364 ft-lbs at 1,150 fps is the same as Speer Gold Dot 124-grain, with about 7 percent less recoil energy than Winchester Defender +P 124 in the same pistol
- Standard pressure, so it runs in any 9mm pistol without checking a +P rating, unlike Critical Duty +P 124 FlexLock or Defender +P
- Speer Lawman 124 TMJ tracks it within 60 fps and about 9 percent in recoil energy, so a practice load at the same bullet weight exists
- 32 ft-lbs less muzzle energy than Winchester Defender +P 124 and 16 ft-lbs less than Critical Duty +P 124 FlexLock
- About 16 percent more recoil energy than Hornady Critical Defense 115 FTX in a compact pistol, which matters in a micro-compact
- Speer Gold Dot 124-grain posts identical velocity and energy, so nothing in the numbers separates the two and the choice is bullet design
