Product Overview

Hornady's Critical Duty 124gr FlexLock is a +P 9mm load that hits 1175 fps and delivers 380 ft-lbs of energy. That velocity and energy sit well above standard-pressure defensive loads, and the +P designation means Hornady loaded it to higher chamber pressures for more performance out of duty-length barrels. The nickel-plated brass case resists corrosion and makes press-checks easy in dim light. Hornady built this load from the ground up to pass every FBI barrier protocol test, and the combination of velocity, bullet construction, and terminal behavior earned it adoption by federal and local law enforcement agencies.

The FlexLock bullet separates this load from standard hollow point designs. A flexible polymer insert fills the hollow point cavity, which prevents the opening from getting clogged when the bullet passes through auto glass, plywood, sheet metal, or layered denim. Most traditional JHP bullets can plug up after hitting a hard barrier and then fail to expand in tissue. The FlexLock tip pushes debris out of the way and starts expansion regardless of what the bullet hit first. An InterLock ring also locks the copper jacket to the lead core mechanically, so the bullet stays in one piece during deep, straight-line penetration. In gel testing, the expanded bullet typically measures around .50 caliber and penetrates 14 to 16 inches after intermediate barriers.

This load works best in full-size and compact pistols rated for +P ammunition. Officers and armed citizens who might need to fire through a car door or windshield get consistent expansion where other bullets would just punch through without opening up. For home defense, the same barrier-blind performance means the bullet will penetrate interior walls more than a lighter fragmenting design, so shooters in apartments or close-quarters housing should weigh that tradeoff. The +P recoil is snappier than standard-pressure 124gr loads, and finding affordable practice ammo that matches the impulse takes some effort. Spending time at the range with this specific load before carrying it is worth the investment.

Strengths
  • FlexLock polymer tip fills the hollow point cavity and prevents clogging through auto glass, plywood, sheet metal, and heavy denim, where traditional open-cavity JHP bullets often plug up and fail to expand
  • 380 ft-lbs of muzzle energy at 1175 fps puts it well above standard-pressure 9mm defensive loads, giving more tissue disruption per hit from duty-length barrels
  • InterLock ring mechanically locks the jacket to the core, providing a secondary retention system that keeps the bullet in one piece during deep penetration through barriers
  • Tested and certified through all five FBI barrier protocols, with consistent expansion to roughly .50 caliber and 14-to-16-inch gel penetration across every test condition
Limitations
  • The +P pressure generates noticeably sharper recoil than standard-pressure 124gr defensive loads, which slows follow-up shots in lightweight compact and subcompact pistols
  • Not every 9mm handgun is rated for sustained +P use, so shooters need to check their pistol's manual before making this a carry load
  • Barrier-blind performance and deep penetration mean the bullet will punch through interior walls more readily than lighter fragmenting designs, which is a real concern for home defense in shared-wall housing
  • Finding affordable practice ammunition that replicates the +P recoil impulse takes effort, and most standard-pressure 124gr range loads feel noticeably softer
