Pistol Red Dot: 10-Yard vs 25-Yard Zero

Zero a slide-mounted red dot at 25 yards. With the dot 0.9" over the bore, a 124gr 9mm zeroed at 25 never rises above the dot: 0.6" low at 5 yards, dead-on at 25, an inch low at 50. A 10-yard zero is still climbing when it passes the target, peaks 0.9" high at 36 yards and does not come back to the dot until 61, so hits sit above the dot from 15 to 60 yards. If your range ends at 10 yards, zero there and expect to be 0.7" high at 25.
The 15-yard zero is a fair compromise, within a quarter inch of the dot to 40 yards, and the 50-yard zero suits match shooters who accept half an inch of height at 25 to be dead-on on far steel. Bullet weight matters less than the zero: 115, 124 and 147gr loads land within an inch of each other at 50 from the same 25-yard zero. A .45 ACP cares even less, because its slower bullet needs less climb to reach the dot; a 230gr .45 at 890 fps zeroed at 10 peaks only 0.46" high and is 0.4" high at 25.

Key terms
- Near zero
- Where the bullet first climbs up through the line of sight. It starts below the sight, because the sight sits above the barrel.
- Far zero
- Where it falls back down through the line of sight. A "200-yard zero" is the far zero; the near zero comes with it.
- Max ordinate
- The highest the bullet gets above the line of sight, between the two crossings. This is what makes a zero shoot high in the middle.
- Point blank range (MPBR)
- The zero that keeps the whole arc inside a vital zone for the longest distance, so you can aim at the centre and hold dead-on.

Who it's for
Shooters who zero indoors and want the dot on the hole at the distance they practise most. With the dot 0.9" over the bore a 124gr 9mm zeroed at 10 yards is still climbing when it passes the target; it peaks 0.9" high at 36 yards, comes back through the line of sight at 61, and is 5.7" low at 100. The catch is the middle: at 25 yards the bullet is 0.7" above the dot, and every shooter who zeroed at 10 and then found the dot "shooting high at 25" has met this arc.

Who it's for
A compromise some carry-pistol shooters like. Zeroed at 15 the bullet peaks a quarter inch high at 28 yards, crosses back at 42 and is 7.9" low at 100. It is within a quarter inch of the dot from the muzzle to 40 yards, which is genuinely useful; its cost against the 25-yard zero is that it is set at a distance most bays cannot confirm precisely, and it gives up almost nothing you can see.

Who it's for
Most red-dot pistols. With the dot 0.9" over the bore a 25-yard zero is a tangent zero: the bullet touches the line of sight at 25 and is never above it. It is 0.6" low at 5 yards, dead-on at 25, an inch low at 50 and 8.8" low at 100. The dot is the bullet, or a hair above it, at every distance you can see, which is the easiest picture to shoot, and a 4" zone still runs to 54 yards.

Who it's for
Competition shooters with 50-yard steel on the stage. Zeroed at 50 the bullet crosses the line of sight at 13 yards, peaks 0.5" at 31, returns to zero at 50 and is 7" low at 100. Half an inch of peak is inside most shooters' groups; what it costs is a zero you cannot set on a 25-yard bay without knowing the offset, which is 0.5" high at 25.
Why Sight Height Changes the Answer
The entire 10-versus-25 argument is a sight-height argument. A red dot on a slide sits about 0.9" over the bore; iron sights sit about 0.65". The table below shows the same zeros at both: with irons the 10-yard zero peaks 0.43" instead of 0.94" and crosses back at 45 yards instead of 61, because the bore has to point up only two-thirds as far to reach the sight line at 10 yards. With irons a 10-yard zero is nearly harmless; with a dot it is a real crossover.
That is why old advice from iron-sight pistols, where a 10- or 15-yard zero was normal, transfers poorly to dots, and why a pistol with suppressor-height irons co-witnessing under a dot shows a small disagreement between the two sight pictures at 50 yards even after both are zeroed at 25. Frame-mounted and taller optics sit higher still, 1.1" or more over the bore, and push the arc the other way: measure from the centre of the bore to the centre of the window and put the number into the calculator below rather than trusting a preset.

How Barrel Length Changes This
Federal's 1,150 fps for the 124gr is a 4" barrel figure. A 3" subcompact loses about 50 fps, a 5" competition gun gains about the same, and the effect at 50 yards is a few tenths of an inch of drop. The heavier 147gr at 1,000 fps is the one to watch: it is about 2.7" lower than the 124gr at 100 yards from the same 25-yard zero, though only about half an inch lower at 50. Inside 25 yards no barrel length changes the picture; the sight height does.
Which Zero Is Wrong for You
The 10-yard zero is wrong for a 9mm dot pistol shot past 15 yards, especially in a match where 50-yard steel is on the menu: the bullet is 0.7" high at 25 and 0.9" high at 36, and a co-witnessed iron sight will not agree with the dot anywhere but 10 yards. The 50-yard zero is wrong for a carry gun confirmed on a 25-yard bay, because you cannot see the 0.5" offset you are supposed to be holding for.
The 25-yard zero is wrong for nobody in particular, but it is wrong to set it by extrapolating a 10-yard group. The near-side geometry is steep enough that a quarter inch of error at 10 yards is most of an inch at 25; confirm at the real distance.
No zero is wrong enough to matter past 75 yards on a pistol. Between the 10- and 50-yard zeros the 9mm is 5.7" to 8.8" low at 100 and a .45 is 13" to 15" low; at that range the group is bigger than the difference.
