The Speer Gold Dot 147-grain JHP is a subsonic 9mm defensive load running at 985 fps with 317 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle, a power factor of 145. The bullet is a bonded jacketed hollow point; bonding is meant to keep the jacket and core together as the bullet expands. From a 25-yard zero it sits 1.9 inches low at 50 yards and 13.3 inches low at 100, moving at 931 fps at 50. In a 1.9-pound compact pistol the estimated recoil energy is 5.1 ft-lbs.
Federal HST 147, the other 147-grain load here, is 15 fps faster with 9 ft-lbs more energy and about 3 percent more recoil. The 124s are a different picture: Speer Gold Dot 124 and Federal HST 124 leave the muzzle 165 fps faster with 47 ft-lbs more energy, and they produce about 8 percent less recoil energy in the same pistol than this heavier load. Hornady Critical Duty +P 124 FlexLock is 190 fps faster with 63 ft-lbs more and still about 4 percent less recoil.
