Product Overview
Federal's Champion load uses a 200-grain lead semi-wadcutter hollow point, a plain lead bullet with a hollow nose meant for self-defense. It leaves the muzzle at 870 fps with 336 ft-lbs, for a power factor of 174, which clears the 165 major floor. From a 25-yard zero it prints 2.5 inches low at 50 yards and 17.3 inches low at 100.
It is the mildest of the 200-grain loads here. Fiocchi 200 SJHP starts 30 fps faster and produces about 6 percent more recoil energy in the same revolver, and CCI Blazer 200 is 50 fps faster with about 10 percent more. DoubleTap 200 TAC-XP runs 130 fps faster and 108 ft-lbs stronger. The most telling comparison is PMC Bronze 180, which beats the Champion by 110 fps and 48 ft-lbs at the muzzle for about 1 percent less recoil. The PMC is also flatter, by 0.5 inch at 50 yards and 3.2 inches at 100. Federal Personal Defense 180-grain sits at the soft end, with about 27 percent less recoil but 71 ft-lbs less energy.
Buy it if you want a 200-grain bullet that makes major with the least recoil of the 200-grain loads compared here. Buyers who care most about energy for a given amount of recoil should choose PMC Bronze 180 instead. For cowboy matches, HSM's 200-grain cowboy load is a plain lead bullet loaded mild for that job and kicks about 4 percent less than the Champion in the same revolver.
- About 20 percent less recoil energy than DoubleTap 200 TAC-XP in the same revolver
- Power factor 27 points above Federal Personal Defense 180-grain, which scores minor
- Keeps 303 ft-lbs of energy at 50 yards
- Clears major by only 9, the thinnest margin of the loads that make it, where CCI Blazer 200 clears it by 19
- 24 ft-lbs less muzzle energy than Fiocchi 200 SJHP at the same bullet weight
- At 50 yards it carries 303 ft-lbs against 325 for PMC Bronze 180, which recoils no harder
