Magtech's 158-grain FMJ Flat is the mildest of the full-magnum ball loads on this page, and it is still a magnum: 1,235 fps, 535 ft-lbs and a power factor of 195, 30 over the 165 USPSA major floor. The flat-nosed jacketed bullet is a range bullet and is not built to expand. From a 25-yard zero it drops 1.1 inches at 50 yards and 8.6 inches at 100, still moving 1,121 fps with 441 ft-lbs at 50 and 1,038 fps with 378 ft-lbs at 100.
Sellier & Bellot 158 FMJ is the nearest match: 28 fps faster at the muzzle with about 4 percent more recoil energy in the same revolver, and half an inch less drop at 100 yards at 8.1 inches; at 50 yards the two are within 0.1 inch of each other. Fiocchi 142 FMJ-TC gives up 16 grains and leaves 185 fps faster, yet its recoil energy is only about 3 percent above the Magtech. Armscor 158 FMJ is listed at 1,545 fps and 823 ft-lbs, 310 fps and 288 ft-lbs ahead of this load, and produces about 48 percent more recoil energy.
Buy this for full-magnum practice that stays on the easy side of magnum: it is the ball load to pick if you want the 158-grain weight most magnum carry and woods loads use, with the least recoil energy of the four. Remington Performance WheelGun 158 LSWC has the same 1,235 fps and 535 ft-lbs and the same recoil energy in the same revolver; the only difference is its plain lead semi-wadcutter bullet, which cuts a cleaner hole in paper but is turned away by some indoor ranges. If your range allows lead and you shoot paper for score, buy the Remington instead. If you want high-volume practice without magnum recoil, .38 Special is the softer option.
