Product Overview
HSM markets its Trophy Gold 168-grain Berger VLD for "medium to large game at extended ranges." It is loaded with Berger's VLD Hunting bullet, a long, low-drag hollow point with a boat tail. The bullet carries a G1 BC of .617, and the load leaves the muzzle at 2,900 fps. At 500 yards it still carries 1,793 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Federal's 168-grain Berger Hybrid Hunter, the HSM load starts 30 fps faster and holds a little better in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the HSM bullet about 14 inches sideways and the Federal about 15. The two kick almost exactly alike in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 162-grain ELD-X, the HSM gives up a little ground. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Hornady drops about 44 inches at 500 yards and the HSM about 46, and the same wind pushes the Hornady about 13 inches.
