The 7mm-08 Remington is a necked-down .308 Winchester that fires .284" diameter bullets. Remington standardized it in 1980, but wildcatters had been shooting the cartridge since the late 1950s. It pushes 140-grain bullets around 2,800 fps from a 22" barrel and generates roughly 20% less recoil than the .308 while delivering similar energy at hunting distances. The mild kick makes it a favorite among recoil-sensitive shooters, youth hunters, and anyone who wants to shoot more and flinch less.
The 7mm-08 fits in short-action rifles, so guns chambered for it tend to be lighter and handier than standard-length magnums. Factory ammo runs from 120-grain varmint loads up to 160-grain options for larger game. The .284 bore offers excellent bullet selection with high ballistic coefficients, giving the cartridge reach beyond what the case size might suggest. Hunters use it on everything from antelope to elk, though it really shines on deer-sized game inside 400 yards.
