The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Target and match shooting is what Hornady markets the V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT for. The ELD-VT is a light polymer-tipped bullet, rated by Hornady at a G1 BC of .410. It leaves the muzzle at 3,300 fps and is still moving at 2,186 fps at 500 yards.

Compared with Hornady's Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX, which Hornady markets for varmints, the V-Match starts 90 fps faster with a lighter bullet, and the two stay close at every distance. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the V-Match about 11 inches sideways and the Varmint Express about 12. That is how far from the aim point each shot lands if you make no correction. Zeroed at 100 yards, the V-Match drops about 21 inches at 400 and the Varmint Express about 22. The V-Match also kicks about 13 percent less in the same rifle.

Buy the V-Match for target shooting if you want a light, fast bullet with mild recoil. Pick the Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX if you are shooting varmints, the use Hornady markets it for; its heavier bullet carries 1,990 ft-lbs at the muzzle. For hunting, Sig Sauer's Elite 80-grain Solid Copper is a hunting load at the same bullet weight, with a solid copper bullet and no lead core, and it leaves the muzzle 75 fps faster.

Strengths
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 9 inches at 300; the Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX drops about 10
  • A G1 BC of .410, a shade higher than the .400 of the Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX
  • Still 93 fps ahead of the Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX at 500 yards
Limitations
  • Carries 1,934 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 56 less than the Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX
  • Hornady markets it for target and match shooting and markets the Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX for varmints
  • At 500 yards a steady 10 mph crosswind still pushes it about 19 inches sideways
