How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

The Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX is a varmint load: that is the use Hornady markets it for. The V-MAX is Hornady's polymer-tipped varmint bullet. Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .400, and this load starts it at 3,210 fps with 1,990 ft-lbs of energy.

Compared with Hornady's V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT, which Hornady markets for target and match shooting, the Varmint Express is a little heavier and a little slower. The V-Match leaves the muzzle 90 fps faster. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Varmint Express drops about 10 inches at 300 and the V-Match about 9. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Varmint Express about 12 inches sideways and the V-Match about 11. That is how far from the aim point each shot lands if you make no correction. The Varmint Express kicks about 15 percent harder in the same rifle.

Buy the Varmint Express if you want a load Hornady markets for varmints, with the heavier of the two bullets. Pick the V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT if you shoot mostly at targets, the use Hornady markets it for, or if lighter recoil matters to you. If the same rifle also hunts medium game, Hornady markets its Superformance 90-grain CX for that; it is a copper alloy bullet with no lead core that leaves the muzzle 115 fps faster.

Strengths
  • Carries 1,990 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 56 more than the V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT
  • Nearly the same G1 BC as the V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT: .400 against .410
  • Hornady markets it for varmints, with a polymer-tipped 87-grain V-MAX bullet
Limitations
  • Slower than the V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT at every distance: 2,093 fps against 2,186 at 500 yards
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 22 inches at 400; the V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT about 21
  • At 500 yards a steady 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 20 inches sideways
