How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

The Superformance 90-grain CX is a copper hunting load that Hornady markets for medium game. The CX is Hornady's polymer-tipped copper alloy hunting bullet, with no lead core. Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .418, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,325 fps.

Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X, the CX starts 275 fps faster and is still 42 fps ahead at 500 yards. The heavier ELD-X holds up better in the wind: at 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the CX about 18 inches sideways and the ELD-X about 16. That is how far from the aim point each bullet lands if you make no correction. The ELD-X also carries 1,441 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yards to the CX's 1,385. Compared with Sig Sauer's Elite 80-grain Solid Copper, the other copper load with no lead core, the CX starts 50 fps slower but passes the Sig by 100 yards, and the same wind pushes the Sig about 23 inches at 500.

Buy the CX if you want a copper hunting bullet with no lead core that keeps its speed out to 500 yards. Pick the Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X if lead is fine and wind is your main concern; Hornady markets it for the same medium game. Pick the Sig Sauer Elite 80-grain Solid Copper if light recoil matters more to you than wind. If you shoot varmints, Hornady markets its Varmint Express 87-grain V-MAX for them, and it kicks about 10 percent less than the CX in the same rifle.

Strengths
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 20 inches at 400; the Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X drops about 23
  • Kicks about 16 percent less than the Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X in the same rifle
  • Carries 1,385 ft-lbs at 300 yards, against 1,136 for the Sig Sauer Elite 80-grain Solid Copper
Limitations
  • Kicks about 24 percent more than the Sig Sauer Elite 80-grain Solid Copper in the same rifle
  • Its G1 BC of .418 trails the .512 of the Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X
  • A steady 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 11 inches sideways at 400 yards; the Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X about 10
