How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Sig Sauer sells its Elite 80-grain Solid Copper as a hunting load, and it suits hunters who want a bullet with no lead in it. The bullet is solid copper with no lead core. Sig rates it at a G1 BC of .340, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,375 fps with 2,025 ft-lbs of energy.

Compared with Hornady's Superformance 90-grain CX, another copper bullet with no lead core, the Sig starts 50 fps faster but slows down sooner. The CX is already the faster of the two at 100 yards, and at 300 yards it carries 1,385 ft-lbs of energy to the Sig's 1,136. The bigger gap is in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Sig about 23 inches sideways and the CX about 18. That is how far from your aim point the bullet lands if you don't correct for the wind.

Buy the Sig if you want a copper hunting bullet that kicks less than the Superformance CX and most of your shots are well inside 500 yards. Pick the Superformance 90-grain CX if you also want copper but shoot farther or often in wind. Pick Hornady's Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet that Hornady markets for medium game, if a bullet without lead is not a requirement: the same wind pushes it about 16 inches at 500 yards. For practice with nearly the same recoil, Hornady's V-Match 80-grain ELD-VT is a load Hornady markets for target and match shooting, and it kicks about 3 percent less.

Strengths
  • Kicks about 20 percent less than the Superformance 90-grain CX in the same rifle
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 9 inches at 300, the same as the Superformance 90-grain CX
  • A solid copper bullet with no lead core that leaves the muzzle at 3,375 fps
Limitations
  • Carries 2,025 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 184 less than the Superformance 90-grain CX
  • Slower than the Superformance 90-grain CX from 100 yards on: 2,044 fps against 2,225 at 500 yards
  • A steady 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 14 inches sideways at 400 yards; the Superformance 90-grain CX about 11
