Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X for medium game. The ELD-X is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a lead core. Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .512, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,050 fps.
Compared with Hornady's Superformance 90-grain CX, the ELD-X starts 275 fps slower and drops more. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 23 inches at 400; the CX about 20. In the wind the ELD-X does better: at 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 16 inches sideways and the CX about 18. That is how far from the aim point each bullet lands if you make no correction. The ELD-X kicks about 18 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Sig Sauer's Elite 80-grain Solid Copper, the ELD-X gives up 325 fps at the muzzle, but the same wind pushes the Sig about 23 inches at 500 yards.
Buy the ELD-X if you hunt medium game at longer range, wind is your main problem, and you don't need a bullet without lead. Pick the Superformance 90-grain CX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core and a little less drop. Pick the Sig Sauer Elite 80-grain Solid Copper if you want copper and the lightest recoil. For practice, Hornady BLACK 105-grain BTHP is a match hollow point with a boat tail that Hornady markets for target shooting; at 500 yards the same wind pushes it the same 16 inches, and it kicks about the same.
