Product Overview
For steel and paper, Hornady's Match line loads the 108-grain ELD Match bullet, and Hornady markets the load for target and match shooting. The ELD Match is a polymer-tipped match bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .536. It leaves the muzzle at 2,750 fps and is still moving at 1,970 fps at 500 yards.
Compared with Hornady's BLACK 105-grain BTHP, the ELD Match gives up nothing downrange but adds a little recoil. The BLACK uses a hollow point with a boat tail, 3 grains lighter, and both leave the muzzle at 2,750 fps. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 18 inches sideways, and zeroed at 100 yards each drops about 54 inches at 500. The BLACK kicks about 5 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the ELD Match if you shoot targets out to 500 yards and want Hornady's polymer-tipped match bullet. Pick the BLACK 105-grain BTHP if a little less recoil matters more to you than the polymer tip, since the two fly almost the same path. Pick Hornady's Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X if you also hunt: Hornady markets it for medium game, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 53 inches at 500, close to the ELD Match's 54.
