Product Overview
Hornady markets its BLACK 105-grain BTHP for target and match shooting. The BTHP is a match bullet, a hollow point with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .530. It leaves the muzzle at 2,750 fps, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 54 inches at 500.
Compared with Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match, the BLACK flies almost the same path. Both leave the muzzle at 2,750 fps, and the ELD Match drops the same 54 inches at 500 yards from a 100-yard zero. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 18 inches sideways. The differences are in the bullet itself. The ELD Match is 3 grains heavier and carries a polymer tip, while the BLACK kicks about 5 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the BLACK if you shoot steel and paper out to 500 yards and want a match load that kicks a little less than the ELD Match. Pick the 108-grain ELD Match if you prefer Hornady's polymer-tipped match bullet and don't mind the slightly harder kick. Pick Hornady's Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X if you also hunt: Hornady markets it for medium game, and it leaves the muzzle 50 fps faster than the BLACK.
