How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Winchester markets its Power-Point 170-grain for whitetail and other big game. The Power-Point is a traditional soft point: a jacketed lead-core bullet with exposed lead at the nose. It leaves the muzzle at 2,920 fps with 3,218 ft-lbs.

Compared with Winchester's Ballistic Silvertip 170-grain, the Power-Point starts exactly the same, at 2,920 fps and 3,218 ft-lbs, with the same recoil in the same rifle. The Silvertip replaces the exposed lead nose with a polymer tip, and that bullet design is the only real choice between the two. Compared with Winchester's Copper Impact 162-grain Extreme Point, the Power-Point leaves the muzzle 45 fps faster with 245 more ft-lbs. The Copper Impact uses a polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core, for hunters who need or prefer lead-free ammunition.

Buy the Power-Point if you hunt whitetail or other big game and want a traditional soft point at the same muzzle speed as the Silvertip. Pick the Ballistic Silvertip 170-grain if you prefer a polymer-tipped bullet at the same weight. Pick the Copper Impact 162-grain if you need a lead-free bullet. Pick the Expedition Big Game 165-grain AccuBond LR if most of your shots are long; Winchester markets it for big game at long range. Browning's Long Range Pro Hunter 175-grain TGK is the pick for a heavier bullet, and Browning pitches it at hunters after a bugling bull or the ram of a lifetime.

Strengths
  • Leaves the muzzle 85 fps faster than Browning's Long Range Pro Hunter 175-grain TGK and kicks about 3 percent less in the same rifle
  • Starts within 12 ft-lbs of the Expedition Big Game 165-grain AccuBond LR at the muzzle
  • A traditional exposed-lead soft point for hunters who prefer one to the polymer tip of the Ballistic Silvertip 170-grain
Limitations
  • Leaves the muzzle 50 fps slower than the Expedition Big Game 165-grain AccuBond LR and kicks about 4 percent more in the same rifle
  • Kicks about 12 percent more than the Copper Impact 162-grain Extreme Point in the same rifle
  • Has a lead core, so it will not do for hunters who need lead-free ammunition such as the Copper Impact 162-grain
