Product Overview
Winchester markets Deer Season XP for deer, and the 6.5 Creedmoor load is for hunters who want a polymer-tipped bullet with mild recoil. It carries a 125-grain Extreme Point, Winchester's polymer-tipped hunting bullet. The load leaves the muzzle at 2,850 fps with 2,254 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Hornady's American Whitetail 129, the Deer Season XP starts 30 fps faster, and the American Whitetail kicks about 5 percent harder in the same rifle. The real difference between them is the bullet: the American Whitetail uses Hornady's InterLock, a soft point with a ring that locks the jacket to the lead core, while the Extreme Point has a polymer tip. Compared with Hornady's Superformance 129 SST, the Deer Season XP is slower but easier to shoot. The Superformance leaves the muzzle 100 fps faster and kicks about 11 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Deer Season XP if you hunt deer and want a polymer-tipped bullet that kicks less than the American Whitetail and the Superformance. Pick the American Whitetail if you prefer a traditional soft point at nearly the same speed. Pick the Superformance if you want the extra speed and don't mind the heavier kick. For practice before the season, Winchester USA 125-grain Open Tip Range leaves the muzzle at the same speed with the same recoil, so range sessions feel like the hunting load.
- Kicks about 6 percent less than the Federal Terminal Ascent 130 in the same rifle
- Leaves the muzzle 100 fps faster than the Remington Scirocco Bonded 130, 2,850 fps against 2,750
- Starts 30 fps faster than the Hornady American Whitetail 129 while kicking less in the same rifle
- The Hornady Superformance 129 SST starts with 2,493 ft-lbs at the muzzle against 2,254
- Gives up 9 ft-lbs of muzzle energy to the Federal Terminal Ascent 130 even though it starts 50 fps faster
- The Hornady American Whitetail 129 starts with 23 ft-lbs more muzzle energy, 2,277 against 2,254
