Federal's Terminal Ascent 130-grain load is for hunters who want a bonded bullet that holds its speed at distance. The Terminal Ascent is a bonded, polymer-tipped hunting bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .532, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,800 fps. At 500 yards it still carries 1,162 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Remington's Scirocco Bonded 130, another bonded, polymer-tipped bullet of the same weight, the Terminal Ascent is close to a twin. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes both bullets about 17 inches sideways. The Terminal Ascent starts 50 fps faster, and recoil is nearly identical. Compared with Hornady's Superformance 129 SST, the Terminal Ascent is slower but just as steady in wind. The Superformance starts 150 fps faster, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 47 inches at 500 against about 52 for the Terminal Ascent. The same wind pushes the Superformance about 18 inches. The Superformance also kicks about 4 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Terminal Ascent if you want a bonded, polymer-tipped bullet and expect shots out to 500 yards. Pick the Scirocco if you prefer Remington's version of the same kind of bullet; it starts a little slower and kicks a little less. Pick the Superformance if a flatter path matters more to you than a bonded bullet and a little more recoil does not bother you. For practice, Winchester USA 125-grain Open Tip Range is a range load with slightly less recoil.
