For drills, zeroing and plinking, ATS's 55-grain M193 is plain range ammunition. It fires a 55-grain full metal jacket bullet, the plain jacketed bullet most practice loads use, at 3,150 fps, with 1,210 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. Use it only in rifles chambered for 5.56 NATO.
Compared with Winchester's White Box 55-grain M193, the ATS leaves the muzzle 30 fps slower and kicks about 1 percent less in the same rifle; the two are nearly level on both counts. Compared with GGG's 55-grain M193, the ATS gives up more speed: the GGG leaves the muzzle 180 fps faster and kicks about 7 percent harder in the same rifle. In both pairings the ATS is the slower and softer-kicking load.
Buy the ATS for drills and plinking if soft recoil matters more to you than muzzle speed. Pick GGG's 55-grain M193 if you want the fastest start and don't mind the extra kick. Pick PMC's X-Tac 55-grain M193 for a middle path: it leaves the muzzle 120 fps faster than the ATS and kicks about 4 percent more in the same rifle.
