Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 270-grain ELD-X for large game, and it is the .338 Lapua hunting load to pick when shots may run long in open country. The ELD-X is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .757. It leaves the muzzle at 2,800 fps and still carries 2,974 ft-lbs of energy at 500 yards.
Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX 280-grain LRX, the ELD-X starts 200 fps faster and gives up less to the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD-X about 12 inches sideways and the Barnes about 15. Zeroed at 100 yards, the ELD-X drops about 47 inches at 500 and the Barnes about 58, and in the same rifle the two kick almost the same. Compared with Winchester's Expedition Big Game 300-grain AccuBond CT, the ELD-X leaves the muzzle 150 fps faster with nearly the same muzzle energy, and the Winchester kicks about 16 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the ELD-X if you hunt large game where shots can stretch toward 500 yards and the wind is part of the problem. Pick the Barnes VOR-TX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core; Barnes markets it for big game and medium game. Pick the Winchester Expedition Big Game if you want a heavier 300-grain bullet and can live with the extra recoil. For paper and steel, Hornady's Match 285-grain ELD Match is the Hornady load marketed for target and match shooting, and the same 500-yard wind pushes it about 11 inches.
